The decision to dismantle the encampment follows thorough assessments and consultations with local outreach teams, social service providers, and public health experts.

On June 17th, 2024, at approximately 7:30 pm, Nottawasaga OPP began an arson investigation at the homeless encampment located in Alliston near Young St. A dispute between multiple individuals resulted in a tent being set on fire and destroyed. No injuries have been reported. New Tecumseth Fire services attended the scene and safely extinguished the fire.

As a result, 32-year-old Rebecca Rogers from New Tecumseh has been arrested and charged with:

– Arson – Damage to property

The accused has been held for a bail hearing.

In collaboration with various community partners, the OPP initiated the removal of the homeless encampment located on private property on June 18, 2024. This decision was made following thorough assessments and consultations with local outreach teams, social service providers, and public health experts. Comprehensive support services and networks were made available including temporary shelter options, mental health counseling, substance abuse treatment referrals, and access to healthcare facilities.

The OPP, along with our community partners, aim to collectively ensure the safety and well-being of all individuals involved while providing access to essential services and resources.

The Nottawasaga OPP encourages community members to support these efforts by referring individuals in need to local service providers or by volunteering with organizations dedicated to addressing homelessness.
